Scottish Hilghland Wildlife Watching in the Cairngorms and Spey Valley

Newtonmore is an ideal base for watching Scottish Highland Wildlife in the Cairngorms and Spey Valley area. The BBC TV programme "Springwatch" spent several weeks in the Rothiemurcus estate and surrounding area recently  and featured Ospreys, Wildcats, Capercaillie and Crested Tits. It is also possible to see Red Deer, Red Squirrels, Pine Marten, Reindeer, Golden Eagles, Scottish Crossbills, Mountain Hare, Ptarmigan and several other species best seen in the area.

There are also two RSPB reserves at Loch Insch where you can watch waterfowl in season  and Boat of Garten where you can see Ospreys and Capercaillie. 

The Craigerne Hotel can put together wildlife viewing breaks, with breakfast at the hotel, a day wildlife watching with guide and transport before returning to the hotel for dinner and a well earned rest with drinks in one of our lounges.

Day Time Excursions in the Cairngorm National Park are £140 per group (2 to 6 persons) and include a guide and transport. Options include:

Pine Forest - visit local pine forests for Capercaillie, Black Grouse, Crested Tit, Scottish Crossbill and other woodland birds, with chance of Red Squirrel.

Highland Glen - Visit a local glen to see Golden Eagle, Red Deer, Red-throated Diver, Red Kite, Ring Ouzel, Peregrine etc.

Cairngorm Moutains - Walk into the Cairngorms in search of Ptarmigan, Dotterel and Snow Bunting.

Highland Experience - Travel deep into the Highland glens on this 4x4 safari, allowing you to get close to Red Deer, Sika Deer, Roe Deer and take photos. Have lunch whilst looking for Golden Eagle and other raptors.

Evening Pine Marten and Badger Watch - located at local hide with guide, £20 per person
